You Ask, We Answer - Questions from our Users

    Hi All,

We often get questions from our users through our blog here, our customer service representatives, and our newsletters.  Here are some of our most asked questions and the answers.

    -Scott

Q: “Why do I have to include @hotmail.com with my email address every time I log on to hotmail?”  > Every time I log on to hotmail I have to append "@hotmail.com". This
    > strikes me as ridiculous since I am already at a Windows site before I
    > even begin to log on. I don't have to type anything to log on to Gmail,
    > and only my name on Yahoo. (Plus passwords, of course)
    – John L.

My wife complains to me about this one too. The reason for it is because we have so many users, we created multiple domains (a domain is the word after the @ symbol - @domain.com) so that people could continue getting email addresses they wanted (like John, instead of john19872). We now have @hotmail, @live, and @msn. So while Yahoo! would have one john; Microsoft could have several.   People also have the ability to create an "EASI passport", which means you can associate your non-Microsoft email address with a Live ID, and use that to sign in instead of creating a @hotmail or other address. You can do that here. Select the option Use your own email address and complete the other fields. You will then be able to access Windows Live services with your existing email address.

Q: When writing an email; why is my compose page is so small? – Carol B.

This began happening when we released our latest service update in March. We have identified this to be a bug and are currently working on the resolution. We plan to have this fixed in the upcoming release later this year.

    Q: How can I get notified when I receive a new Hotmail e-mail? – Peter F.

There are a few different ways you can receive new e-mail alerts including:

    ·         You can setup an alert on your mobile device. Learn how here.

    ·         If you are a Windows Live Messenger user, you can receive alerts when you receive a new email. Learn how here.  If you use Windows Live Mail, you can set up sound notifications by accessing the “Tools” menu and selecting “Options…”

Here is what you should see:

    Q: How do I add a contact? – Jessica B.

You can add contacts in a few different ways depending on if you use Windows Live Hotmail or if you use Windows Live Mail.  You can learn about Windows Live Hotmail contacts here and Windows Live Mail here.

Q: How do I set up an automatic vacation reply? – Lyle S.

That’s a great question now that summer has arrived.  Setting up an automatic vacation reply is a very simple task. You can read how to do it here.

Q: Why am I prompted to log in twice when I use Hotmail? - Mary K.

This has been identified as a bug in Windows Live ID that is specific to users with an @msn account and using a non-Microsoft browser; such as Firefox, Safari, and Opera.  The product group has identified the problem and is working on the resolution. The service will be updated with the fix in the upcoming release slated for later this year.

Q: My emails have the wrong time-stamp on them. How do I change it? – Bob D.

You can change your time zone setting by doing the following:

    1.       Go to Options

    2.       Click on “View and edit your personal information”

    3.       Click on “Registered Information”

    4.       Scroll down to the “Time zone” drop down and select the appropriate one

    5.       Click Save

    6.       Click “Sign out” in the upper right corner

    7.       Navigate back to www.hotmail.com and sign back into your account

Q: Can I create sub-folders within my folders in Hotmail? – John R.

You cannot create sub-folders within Hotmail.

Q: My mom can’t get into her Hotmail account since she received an email asking her to change her password.” Summer D.

Unfortunately, it sounds like your mother has fallen subject to a phishing scam.  In the June newsletter I created a story that details how some people use this type of scam to gain personal information or take over email accounts for SPAM purposes. To regain access, please have her submit a request to our Help Center. And then you both should read the entry on identity protection on my blog to learn how to prevent this in the future.

Since the upgrade, people I've been sending emails to have not been receiving them at all. There's never a "failure notice" but I noticed there are no replies. I've used my yahoo account to re-send the emails or called instead, I've been told they never got the email I sent through this hotmail account. Is anyone else having this problem? Is anyone at MSN fixing it?

I think it is a crappy answer also to why we have to type @hotmail.com.  Heck I typed in the box hotmail.com, not msn , not another other MSN domain.  When i am using msn mobile I dont have to type it in.    it is part of the reason I dont use hotmail as much, except for mail list and required emails.  It not hard  if i type in hotmail.com, take me only to hotmail, if i type in msn.com take me only to msn.

I, too, have used IE v7 and have to input my password several times (at least twice) before I don't get an error message.  It is annoying.  Also, all my contacts disappeared and only those show who have been previously marked favorites - I want all of them to show!  It is taking hours to go and remark all the ones that used to show.  Also, we have three email users and often when one or two of us tries to sign in, clicking on our user name, only the third user name shows up and only wants that user's password.  We end up having to "sign in using another account", retyping in the account that was already there but, by some invisible default, kept switching to the third account!  HELP!

I agree, the "double log in" occurs even in IE 7, which I use.  It has been going on for a number of weeks now.  I know for a fact that I am typing in my password correctly, but on both my Hotmail accounts I get a "invalid username or password" message the first time I log in.  Usually, I can get in on the second try but sometimes it takes me 3 or 4 tries for Hotmail to accept my password.  At first, I thought maybe it was some sort of phishing scam.  This is insane.

How do I know for sure someone received my email.  I have sent emails and never received a failure notification but the recipient said he never got them.  Is there some sort of "certified reciept" you can put on an email?

I don't understand why I have so much trouble signing in now? It started yesterday and it is like a pot shot of guesswork just to get into my email account now. I have to try every roundabout way just to hope to get in. Why is this happening and how can it be fixed!!!

I don't understand why anybody would want their newest emails at the BOTTOM of the page. Say you use email frequently and you are the type of person that saves EVERY single email, in order to get to your new emails, you would have to scroll MILES down the page or to page 329 just to read them! It's just asinine to have the newest emails appear at the bottom! Personally I would like to see my newest emails first in case one of them is urgent. It's not hard to go back through the list in reverse to see your oldest emails first. Frankly I don't see why you want to see your old emails again and again.

I loved the old format too! I wish you could keep all e-mails arranged by date with newest at the bottom. If I change it that way, next time I log in it's back to newest at the top! Also, I miss the delete button at the bottom as well as the top. These little features made Hotmail easier to navigate Please put 'em back!

we have 21 emails (yep 2-5 per user:) ) set in live mail for all family (15 hotmail and 6 gamil).

1- why there is not UP/DOWN arrow for moving account in left pane? (but there is option in context menu)
2-  why you don't have "download headers only" for an entire hotmail account? (but there is options to do it per folder in syc setting)
3- Why you don't have CLASSIC view option to make it outlook express? you might be putting off a lot of old users with not  have this option.

Apart from that I love it.

I don't like that when I'm reading a message and then click "inbox", it opens the start page instead of inbox, I click inbox again and it goes back to the message I had been reading, and the 3rd time I click "inbox" it goes to the inbox. If I click "inbox" it's because I want to go to inbox...I don't want to go to start page and I don't want to go to the message I had clicked out of in the first place. Totally lame design.

I still don't like having the newer messages at the top and the older ones at the bottom.  Yes, I can sort them by date and have them in a logical order, but then if I navigate away from the inbox and come back I have to resort.

I want to have the "delete" button at the bottom of the page as well as at the top, this saves time when I want to delete a long message after reading it.

I want my favorites list back.

I basically want the old Hotmail format back!  It wasn't broke,(sic)  why did you "fix" it?  (If it ain't broke, don't fix it.)

And of course I don't like the small area to write in when you reply to an e-mail.  I did find out you can save the draft, then open the saved draft and you can see your whole letter.  Again, it was working fine before you messed with it.

My "favorites"list has disappeared ~~ only my 'groups' are still listed. I see directions to mark "contacts", but
nothing for "favorites". Initially, I set it up ~~ what's happened to those instructions?

This has become extremely annoying to continually type in addresses when they ARE in my contacts. Is there a shortcut I can use? If I've typed an email, and want to go to 'contacts', a screen appears telling me I've not SENT....either cancel or OK!
If I hit ok, my email vanishes! AJ

I am also suprised not to see the bug in the top 10 that causes all of your contacts that were added after the upgrade last year, not to be displayed without having to take multiple steps to have them displayed as "favorites". Unfortunately, hotmail decided that it would choose for you without a solution to fix it in less than 10-20 hours of clean up (according to their IT dept.).

Yahoo email has a billion users as well and you don't have to add @yahoo.com when logging in. Something tells me that there is something more MS is not telling their users. - Roland C.

Why don't you make @hotmail the default domain when no domain is provided? Isn't hotmail the domain for vast majority of all Live ID's? Even a dropdown for the most used ones would be an improvement.
